Yesterday I had a project meeting with colleagues in a their office when all of a sudden a camera team appeared in our meeting room. Then a second camera team appeard, than a third and a forth one.

What was up? The leader of the German social democratic party and one of the most reknowed politican in Germany Franz Muentefering was about to visit the place.

The election campaign in Germany starts to heat up. Politicians try to get in contact with every target group possible and get as much media coverage as possible.

In Bavaria politicians visit dairy farmers and folk groups, in Berlin they visit start ups and integration projects.

What are the secrets of keeping your social media campaign successfully running? What are the pitfalls of the day-to-day engagement?

Suppose you want to engage in social media and you have done a good preparation, have digged into the topic of social media, have come up with a marketing strategy and marketing plan. The next step would be to put all this into action.

But be careful: It’s easy to mess up and lose your fan base by doing something stupid. What are the traps you want to avoid? How do you get a lively and happily growing community? As a rule of thumb: social media is easy to mess up – but it’s not rocket science either. Be nice to your audience and your audience will be nice to you. Keep your manners (remember from the previous post: you are the host of a party) and a bit of common sense.

This is the third and last part about corporate social media (here are part one on social media basics and part two on social media strategy). If you don’t want to benefit from mistakes others have done for you read this and know your Ten Commandments for your daily social media routine.

1. Do it yourself
Do not outsource your social media relations to agencies. It’s good to get outside advice or consultancy. But do not let some (random) outsider write your blog posts, tweets, blog answers, … . It will show. Remember that authenticity is vital.

2. Answer!
Answer to thoughtful input from your followers. Answer as often as you can at least from time to time. And try to answer quickly. Use every bit and piece you’re putting out as a nucleus for a conversation. That’s what your goal is on an operational level: communicate with your community.

3. Be all business
You represent a company. So even though your community might be chatting away freely, cursing, cussing, accusing and so on you have to be all business. Don’t use inappropriate language; behave as if you were the host of a party. Don’t get wasted.

4. You give, you get
You need to give something in order to get something back. If you want to get real engagement from your followers you need to give them something: valuable information, first hand info, seriousness, honesty, reliability. Do not scam, do not misuse your followers for strange purposes.

5. Be passionate
Who should become the person responsible for contacting your followers? Easy answer: the person who wants it wholeheartedly. There’s no better precondition for the job as passion. Your company will be represented well and your fans will love passionate communication.

6. Do not underestimate group dynamics
In social media you are not talking to single persons, you are talking to the crowd. This is a different level of communication. People are able to connect to each other. There will by group dynamics. Never underestimate that.

7. Develop a vibe
Try to develop a culture (an atmosphere, a vibe) for your community, which your followers like. Remember that you are the host and the boss of your community. You have to be strict if people threaten to destroy your vibe. If you have rules you will have to be strict if they are being violated. It will gain you the respect of the other users. Your followers will love you for that.

8. Have fun!
If you have fun doing what you do your followers will. If you are a grump in private and have a hard time getting along with people it will show.

9. Represent!
Show faces (i.e. real persons) to your audience. Show them who is representing the company; who is responsible for the posts. Show real people not departments, logos or names only.

10. Take online offline
Do not be all web-focussed. Invite people to your shows, fairs, events or whatever you do in the offline world. Again the important point is to engage your community. This goes vice versa: Get you offline followers involved in your online activities.

Are you in the need of putting together a social media strategy for your company? Have you ever thought about doing so? Are you interested in improving your marketing strategy?

If your answer is yes to one of these questions you’ll find this blog post helpful. You might want to catch up with the basic rules of social media before you start putting together a strategy.

This is the second part of an article in three pieces about corporate social media marketing (1. social media basics, 2. social media strategy, 3. daily social media business). So here’s The Ten Commandments for your social media marketing strategy.

1. Know your goals
Doing social media marketing won’t work if you think you have to do it because other companies are doing it. You have to have know what goals you want to accomplish: better brand recognition, more customer loyalty, sales boost … That’s obviously the first step.

2. Be measureable
Your strategy needs to have measurable outcomes. If you want to do serious social media marketing and don’t measure this don’t start at all. You can start with very easy goals and methods (number of leads, visits, page views, time on site, new twitter followers, …) and work your way through to more sophisticated targets and means.

3. Integrate!
Your whole new social media strategy should be part of your existing marketing plans, strategies, workflows and goals. Integrating it into your existing plans, strategies, workflows, and structures is crucial. Otherwise you’re doomed for failure.

4. Get the management involved
Get the management (or top management/board if you’re a big company) behind your strategy. You will have a much easier job if they understand the value you’re creating. Explain the benefits, the costs and the risks and have a plan for „risk management“.

5. Get resources
Social media marketing doesn’t come for free. You need resources: time, manpower, infrastructure and money. Don’t come unprepared.

6. Define your channels
Define the channels you want to be involved: Twitter, company blog, podcast, youtube, social bookmarking, facebook, mobile, … . Have a specific, integrated and balanced plan for every channel.

7. Social Media is NOT about press releases
Don’t confuse social media marketing with blasting out press releases into the “web 2.0”. If you don’t get that do some basic readings. Social media is about relationship and conversations not preaching.

8. Start small
Don’t rush. Start small. It is best to have some small and achievable goals. Learn on your way. You want to make your first mistakes on a small scale.

9. Register!
Even if you’re not active in social media yet try to grab your (brands’) account names. At least on the important platforms (facebook, twitter, …) . It is much easier to register an account in the first place than trying to get it back later on (even though that’s more and more possible esp. with twitter)

10. Know your advocates
Keep in mind that your contacts are not equal. There are contacts with more and less impact. Get to know the promoters, advocates, hubs, and evangelists of your brand. If you achieved that: Leverage you influencers. Make your advocates look good. You might pamper your VIPs with some extras (sneak previews, …)

What would you do if you were responsible for the social media activities of a multi billion dollar company?

The PR distasters that happened with some very big companies’ social media campaigns got me thinking. What would I do if I had to manage a big brand’s social media section. What kind of basic rules would I be setting? What guidelines would I give out to my team?

The list I came up with was very long so I broke it up in three parts.
Part one: The Ten Commandments for social media marketing
Part two: The Ten Commandments for the social media strategy
Part three: The Ten Commandments for the day to day social media operations
This post is the first part. I will publish part two and three in the next couple of days.

These are Ten Commandments for social media marketing. They are set in stone, they cannot be ignored or bypassed. If you do you will go to hell.

1. Be authentic
This is the one commandment above all others. People feel fooled if you are not authentic. If you think of brands as guidelines through consumers’ lifes, the guideline function is crushed if you aren’t autentic any more. The core value of the brand is gone.

2. Be interesting
Do not post stuff that is not interesting for your target group. Be entertaining. Don’t be boring. Try to tell a story.

3. Be relevant
In addition to being interesting: only tell stuff that’s related to your company (somehow). Create a profile for your social media activities that relates to your brand. Only post stuff that fits this profile. You can bend that rule from time to time but not as much as to dissolve your brand profile.

4. Be easy to share
The power of viral marketing. You don’t have to create super-fancy viral campaigns. Just take the usual measures to be easily spread on the web. That will do the trick.

5. Be first
You want to be the first to publish news about your brand. That’s a basic. You don’t want to be reacting to news about your brand that were told by other people. So tell your community what you’re up to.

6. Be communicative
Be talkative – but in a good way. Talk to your community, be open. Answer their questions and ask questions yourself. Make it easy for others to join in.

7. Do not sell
At least: do not sell bluntly. Social media is not about selling, it’s about valuable content for your readers. If you can deliver that people will buy your stuff. If you don’t deliver that people will leave you! They are following you for a reason! Obviously you can mix in some self advertising, but keep in mind: it’s all about valuable content.

8. Give people a positive experience
Your community should have a positive feeling when visiting your site. They should feel at home in your community. If you’re godd they even might become evangelists of your brand.

9. Be humble and empathetic
Basically: be a nice guy and be social. Be the perfect host. Don’t be arrogant, don’t be aggressive, don’t be geeky, don’t be Mr. Know-it-all, don’t be a smart-ass.

10. Post a lot
Post as much new stuff as you can deliver at the quality standards you set for yourself. In other words: be active, be creative. At least post regularly.

Was macht eine gute Konferenz aus? Interessante Thematik? – Klar. Interessante Redner? Nette Location? Reibungslose Organisation? Nette Bekannte? Sympathische Unbekannte? Unter stützenswerte Veranstalter? – Klar. Auch das alles.

Auf einer Konferenz, die ich vor längerem besucht habe, habe ich mich gefragt, warum es mir hier so gut gefällt. Ich habe gemerkt: Der Benefit von Konferenzen liegt in erster Linie NICHT im Input neuer Ideen, NICHT im Netzwerken, NICHT an der netten location, NICHT am reibungslosen Ablauf etc. Das natürlich auch alles, aber er liegt in erster Linie darin, dass man vom „play-Modus“ in den „record-Modus“ umschalten kann.

Was ist damit gemeint? In der alltäglichen Arbeit ist der „play-Modus“, der Routine-Modus, eingeschaltet. (Warum das so ist, kann man hier nachlesen). Nur so kann man im Alltag effizent funktionieren. Der „record-Modus“ ist das Andere: der „professionelle Urlaub“, die legitimierte Denkpause. Oder die Inspiration auf professionellem Niveau. Der Record-Modus schafft eine neue Erwartungshaltung.

Insofern sind sich eine gute Konferenz und ein gutes Glas Wein sehr ähnlich – bei dem man ebenfalls in einen anderen Modus (Entspannungs) schalten kann.

Eine gelungene Konferenz kann aber immer nur (die Bedingung der Möglichkeit bzw.) den Kontext für den record-Modus bereitstellen. Durch eine Konferenz in den Kreativmodus zu kommen ist somit alles andere als selbstverständlich. Glückwunsch re:publica.

Vorgestern ein einschneidendes Erlebnis gehabt: das subtil-spektakuläre Aufeinanderprallen von zwei Welten.

Ich war auf dem Gründerkongress “Multimedia”, die vom Bundesministerium ausgerichtet war.

Bevor ich den Beweis der Zwei-Welten-Theorie antrete eines vorab: Es geht mir nicht darum hier Beamten-Bashing zu betreiben. Dazu habe ich keinen Anlass und kein Interesse. Ich glaube, dass es in Deutschland recht viel Bürokratie gibt. Meiner Erfahrung nach wird Gründern das Leben und Arbeiten jdeoch nicht unnötig schwer gemacht. Wer schon einmal im Ausland mit Bürokratie zu tun hatte, weiß dann doch sehr zu schätzen, was wir an unseren deutschen Beamten haben. Und das meine ich komplett ironiefrei!

Nichtsdestotrotz prallen mit der web-startup-community und der deutschen Bürokratie zwei Welten aufeinander. Und was dabei herauskommt ist tragikomisch.

Komisch:

… sind die Sprachschwierigkeiten, Verständnisprobleme und kulturellen Unterschiede. Von open source/open access/open standards – als Form der Zusammenarbeit oder “Geisteshaltung” – wurden die Ministerialbeamten völlig überrascht. Da wundert sich ein Beamte, dass Gründer ihre Business-Ideen mit Dritten teilen, besprechen und weiterentwickeln, anstatt so lange wir möglich im stealth mode (schmealth mode) zu bleiben. Verwunderlich ist das deshalb, da diese Personen den Kongress ausrichten und man eine gewisse Sachkenntnis erwarten könnte.

Tragisch:

… ist das platte Klischee des trantütigen, verwaltenden Beamten, das sich leider bewahrheitet hat. Als Prototyp eines deutschen Beamten würde man sich ja einen korrekten Fachmann ohne Bezug zum richtigen Leben vorstellen – einen Mischung aus Steurfachangestelltem und Lehrer aus “Pepe der Paukerschreck”.

… ist der große Apparat, der nicht nur Geld verwaltet und der selbst einen Großteil des verwalteten Geldes, das sicherlich effizienter eingesetzt werden könnte, auffrisst.

Fazit: Die Bürokratie ist leider genauso wahr und richtig wie ihre Klischees. Wahr, traurig, aber immer noch viel besser als im großen Rest der Welt.

P.S.: Es wäre natürlich interessant das inoffizielle Fazit der anderen Seite zu lesen – was denkt die Bürokratie über die web-startup-community.

„Die neue Unübersichtlichkeit“ nannte Habermas in den 90ern seine These, dass bewährte Denkmuster nicht mehr greifen und die Menschen mit ihren vorher funktionierenden Vorstellungen nun orientierungslos zurückbleiben.

In der deutschen Startup-Szene ist seit einiger Zeit genau die gegenteilige Tendenz zu beobachten: es entsteht eine neue Übersichtlichkeit. Damit ist nicht (nur) gemeint, dass die Anzahl der gegründeten Unternehmen weniger geworden ist, sondern vielmehr, dass die „Artenvielfalt“ abgenommen hat – sowohl auf die Kreativität der Business-Ideen als auch auf die Monetarisierungs-Ideen bezogen. Die ehemals recht quirlige Startup-Szene ist einer großen Monotonie gewichen.

Hier die Bestandsaufnahme:

Spätestens seit Beginn „der Krise“ (oder schreiben wir lieber das schönere Wort credit crunch) konstituiert sich die neue Übersichtlichkeit dadurch, dass es eigentlich nur noch zwei Arten von Startups gibt: 1. soziale Netzwerke und 2. Copycats. Natürlich ist diese Darstellung übertrieben, aber man wird das Gefühl nicht los, dass die tiefgreifenden Innovationen momentan nicht stattfinden. Das kommt nicht von ungefähr …

Hier die Gründe:

… sondern hat seine Gründe in der hierarchischen Nahrungskette des Risikokapital-basierten Startup-Systems.

-       Das Venture-Geld sitzt nicht mehr so locker (aktuelle Zahlen hier). Die Knappheit am Beginn der Nahrungskette, also die Knappheit an Humus auf dem alles weitere wächst, hat zur Folge, dass nicht in die innovativen Geschäftsmodelle, sondern in die “sure shots” investiert wird. VCs müssen legen ihr Kapital möglichst sicher an. Die Risiko-Aversion der VCs hat zur Folge, dass wirklich innovative und riskante Modelle es schwerer haben, finanziert zu werden. Eine Monokultur bewährter Geschäfts-Modelle bleibt übrig.

-       Auch die Startup-Ideen werden bodenständiger. Was per se ja gut ist: wenn eine Geschäftsidee durchdacht und ernst gemeint ist. Haarsträubende Ideen (wie z.B. diese hier) kann und will man potenziellen Kapitalgebern nicht mehr so einfach präsentieren. In der momentanen Gründerszene bleiben die „Überzeugungstäter“ übrig – und diese wollen sich nicht mit verrückten Ideen ihren Ruf verderben.

-Nicht nur die Geschäftsideen, sondern auch Formen der Monetarisierung werden übersichtlicher. Einige Monetarisierungsmodelle (v.a. Ad-basierte Businesses) haben sich entweder als nicht profitabel erwiesen, oder werden nicht mehr gefördert, weil sie den Ruf haben, nicht profitabel zu sein. 

Was bleibt ist die neue Übersichtlichkeit.
